The Quarter Pony's manageable size and sociable, friendly nature make it the ideal family horse, a popular starter pony for young people and smaller adults.

 

The Quarter Pony originated in America, with the first American Quarter Pony Society becoming established in 1964; accepting ponies of known and unknown breeding as long as they met the type required.

The Quarter Pony become a recognized breed in Australia with the first Australian Quarter Pony Association becoming established in 2006 but now defunct. Recently the QPAA began operating within Australia, providing affordable membership & registrations for owners of our own Aussie Quarter Pony.

We encourage owners to register their Quarter Pony's - registration is a valuable document providing a record of your horses age, height, and other important details.

While the Quarter Pony shares physical traits with its quarter horse relatives, it stands out as a more suitable mount for riders of smaller stature or those seeking a horse of a more manageable size. Its hardy constitution and even temperament make it a popular choice for children and novice riders.

Moreover, these ponies are highly intelligent and have a willing nature, allowing them to excel in various equestrian disciplines. Whether it be in Western or English riding, the quarter pony's versatility shines through as it effortlessly transitions between tasks like trail riding, jumping, or pleasure riding. With their enduring qualities and versatile abilities, Quarter Ponies are a fantastic choice for a wide range of equestrian activities.

Naturally you will see Quarter Ponies being exhibited in the show ring in Quarter Pony specific classes both in hand and under saddle; this is a good way to get introduced to the breed.

Many Quarter Ponies excel in other equestrian disciplines too - there are a good number of Quarter Ponies showing and competing in open hacking competitions, proving themselves capable of performing in English type events; Quarter Ponies do well at Pony Club, Riding Club, sporting and jumping as well as being competitive in Western disciplines, they hold their own in halter classes as well as ridden events.

The QPAA offers a rewarding awards program for our members - you don't have to go to ag shows, club or breed shows - if your chosen discipline with your Quarter Pony is competitive in a different field, you can still sign up for our awards program when you join.

Non-competitive? Prefer to attend clinics, go on organized trail rides or training days? We even have a section for our non - competitive members.

Every awards program participant will have their achievements recorded and rewarded each year.

The QPAA accepts both ponies with known or unknown breeding for registration, or those registered with other registries that meet the registration requirements.

​

Type: Ponies of Quarter Horse/ Wetsern/ Stock type 

Height: Between 11.2 hh and 14.2 hh.

​

Applicants of correct type that are over 14.2 hh but not exceed 15 hh will be considered for the Over Height register.                            Foal recorded stock or youngstock holding regular registration will be transferred to the Over Height register should they exceed 14.2 hh when measured.

 > A Quarter Pony in either Regular Registry, Over Height Registry or Foal Recorded will have verified parentage of Quarter Pony or

   Quarter Horse / Western / Stock Horse type breeding;

 > Or verifiable Quarter Horse / Western / Stock Horse type breeding;

    or may be an approved pony of Quarter Horse/ Western/ Stock Horse type registered with an approved Association;

 > Or may be approved under the hardship clause:

• Hardship is for ponies where both parents are unknown or not with an approved registry. 

• Ponies must exhibit good quarter pony type & conformation as determined by the Committee.

REGISTRATION GUIDE

​

 > Pony is Between 11.2hh and 14.2hh - or over 14.2 not exceeding 15 hh for Over Height registration.

​

 > Pony is of approved Quarter Horse / Western / Stock Horse type – with or without verified breeding (will be assessed) 

​

 > Pony has previous registration with another Quarter Pony Registry 

​

 > Pony is registered with an Approved Association or Pony has a registered Sire or Dam from an Approved Association 

​

If your Pony meets the above criteria you are invited to join the QPAA and apply to register your pony, if in doubt please contact us, our team will be happy to help.

Assessment is usually done by submission of a set of photos with your registration form and as much supporting documentation regarding your pony's breeding as possible.

Height verification:

​

All foal recorded Colts, Fillies or geldings must be upgraded upon reaching the age of 3 years (d.o.b as of 1 Aug)                         

The Foal Recording certificate will clearly display the date the foal is to be upgraded by. There will be a 2-month period allowed from the 1st Aug to provide the required height verification.

Regular Register & Over Height Register (for Foal Recorded upgrades and new adult applications over the age of 2)

All registrations aged over 2 will be required to submit a height verification. The registration certificate will display the date the final height verification is required by.

​

Registrations may be suspended until verification has been completed, failure to supply a height verification may result in a registration being revoked.
